Disney Channel Pulls "Jessie" Episode

 

The episode that caused anger from parents is titled "Quitting Cold Koala."  In the storyline the high-maintenance Stuart can only eat gluten-free foods, as a result of his annoying attitude he gets pancakes thrown at him.

 

Concerned parents who watched the episode with their children who happens to have gluten-free diets, felt that the episode promoted intolerance of food allergies.   Often kids with food limitation diets are isolated from other kids and parents felt that this episode promotes further isolation.

 

A petition circulated on Change.org and the results convinced Disney Channel to cut the episode from airing again.


Disney Channel responded on Facebook:

"To our viewers, we received your feedback about [the] 'Jessie' episode which some of you accessed early on Video-on-Demand. We are removing this particular episode from our regular programming schedule and will re-evaluate its references to gluten restrictions in the character's diet. Please accept our apologies for the upset this episode caused you and your family. We value your feedback and thank you for watching Disney Channel."

Teen From the Nike 'Find Your Greatness' Ad Shapes Up

Remember the heavyset kid from the Nike 'Find Your Greatness' commercial?  Well his name is Nathan Sorrell.  After the commercial aired, Nathan decided to get in shape and so far, he's lost 32 pounds since last summer—and plans to lose 30 more.

The thirteen year old from London, Ohio went on The Today Show to talk about what motivated him to lose the weight.

 

"I still can't believe that was me then, and this is me now.  It just looks a lot different.  I would never have changed my lifestyle, if I was never in this commercial. That's not the only reason, but that really did help," Nathan told The Today show.

 

Nathan works with a personal trainer and a nutritionist.  He's eating healthier now.  Instead of a double hamburger with all the toppings and fries.  He opts for a turkey sandwich with fruit on the side.  The change has helped him drop from 232 to 200 pounds. 

 

Nathan says seeing himself in the commercial motivated him to lose the weight.  Sounds like Nike will be calling for another commercial soon.  Nice!

Teen Nearly Blinded by Parasite from Contact Lens

 

Ashley Hyde is careful to wear clean contact lens after a nasty infection nearly blinded her.  Ashley's eye was infected by a microscopic parasite that started eating through her cornea.

 

The 18-year-old high school student from Pembroke Pines, Fla., went to the doctor with redness and throbbing pain in her right eye.  The doctor discovered the parasite and blames wearing contact lens as the cause.

 

"Every day, we see people come in with contact lens related to infections, complications, ulcers." Dr. Adam Clarin, an optometric physician, told Local 10.

 

"They did multiple cultures where they scrape your eye.  One time, they had to drill into my eye. It was really nasty,"  Ashley told the local news. 

The doctor recommends using disposable contacts for daily use.   Its safest, to throw out the lens every day and starting with a new one the next day.

Shots Fired at Molly! Celebs Give Warnings Against new Drug

If you're a fan of the latest mainstream rap music then you  are familiar with the popular drug of the moment, “Molly.”

Its the new crack.  "Molly" has been praised in a number of rap songs by up and coming rappers. 

 

Unfortunately many people are falling for the bull.  They think the drug is a harmless fad or party favor.  Fortunately, a few celebrities are speaking up against the drug and talking about its unhealthy effects.

Recently Actress Megan Good, new NBC tv show Deception, tweeted recently about the horrible the effects "Molly" has given her.

Rapper Joe Budden, who recently confessed that Molly almost cost him his life.

Budden said, "I didn’t see a problem with the fact that maybe five days would go by without sleeping. I didn’t see a problem with the fact that maybe I was hallucinating at times. I didn’t see a problem with the fact that I just couldn’t get up and walk sometimes. It just altered your thinking process dramatically, and for a thinker like myself, that was like nothing I’d ever experienced before."

 

Dr. Petros Levounis of the Addiction Institute of New York said, "People get a false sense of safety and security with Molly or ecstasy. Meanwhile, what ecstasy does is give you long-term effects. If ecstasy doesn’t do much for you by itself, it you start combining it with other stimulants like cocaine or bath salts, the problem really skyrockets and you may end up having your heart stop."

Flipper the Robot Cat: Students Create Walking Cart for Cat

 

Flipper the cat suffers from a twisted spine.  Her hips and hind legs are abnormally rotated at a 90-degree angle to the rest of her body.   When she walks her back legs are turned sideways as she's drags and flops her backside across the floor.

 

The students in the Blitz Robotic Club at Conifer High School in Conifer, Colorado, heard about the 9 month-old kitten's disability.  They decided to help the kitten who was facing being put down due to its disability.

 

After a few different devices they created a 'chariot' that allows Flipper to walk, relieves pressure from her hips and recover to walk fully.

Not on Facebook? Employers & Psychiatrists May Think You're a Psychopath

 

In this social media generation, having a Facebook is considered "normal" while not having one is "abnormal."

Today, psychiatrists and employers now find it suspicious for an individual to not engage in Facebook activities.

 

Employers suspect that a potential employer recently deleted an account to hide offensive material (postings).  Now that 90% of recruiters check candidates social media activity, deleting a file might hurt them rather than help.

 

Similarly, psychologists see Facebook activity as a reflection of a healthy social life.  Social media has become a part of life, a positive source of communication and tool to connect with friends/family.

 

Researchers point out incidents such as the Aurora theater shooter who only had online activity on the socialmedia site — Adult Friend Finder.  I don't totally agree totally with this assessment, because there have been numerous incidents of crimes being publicly described and even video tape of violent crimes on Facebook. 

 

On the opposite of the spectrum, another recent research says that overdosing on Facebook may lead to the development of such psychological disorders in teens.  (read article here)
