A 15-year-old girl saw a Pinterest image that read "When I'm bored, I send a text to a random number saying "I hid the body...now what?"
She decided it would be a funny prank so she texted the message to a random number. The prank backfired. Out of 500,000 numbers in the 479 area code, she randomly chose a number that belonged to a police detective.
The police who don't consider these type of texts funny, used an emergency phone trace to find the source of the text.
Upon questioning the girl and her father, they learned it was a prank. The teen was released with a warning but police said the text tied up police resources, and that it is a Class A Misdemeanor to initiate or circulate a false emergency report.
She's lucky they didn't charge her with the crime. It would be terrible to have a criminal record which would be for the rest of her life. Many employers do extensive background checks and having a criminal record could have effected her ability to get a job in the future. The excuse of it being a prank would not matter.
This is a prank that seriously backfired. Next time, hopefully the girl will think about possible bad results before acting out another prank.
