Despite aggressive efforts to prevent students from dropping out, the statistics show only a 3.5 % increase in high school students graduating (years 2001 to 2009).
The graduation rate was 75 percent in 2009, meaning 1 in 4 students failed to get a diploma in four years.
In his State of the Union address, President Barack Obama encouraged states to pass laws to require students to stay in school until they graduate or they turn 18.
It's estimated that high school graduates will earn $130,000 more over their lifetimes than dropouts.
Nevada leads with its low graduation rate of 56 percent. During Nevada's boom years, students dropped out to earn hefty paychecks parking cars, pouring concrete or serving drinks along the Las Vegas Strip.
Now, many of Las Vegas dropouts are out of work because they lack the required credentials and skills. These students didn't think about the long term affect of life without a high school diploma.
Be smart about your life and your future.
Regardless of what your future goals might be, Education is Key! Stay in school, work hard and get the best grades you can. Its better to have as many options for your life as possible.
